Dreamwidth is not a forum, it is a blogging platform. So the structure is different, but you can do many of the same things. Forums usually sort by topic, and if that is what you want, then communities here will meet that need. However, you also have your own blog and can build your own audience and reading page of blogs you follow, which forums often lack.
>> What should i try here? <<
I recommend that you make a list of 5-10 hobbies or other things you enjoy, then search for them in the Interests page to find blogs and communities. You can also look at the topics in the Master List of Follow Friday posts to find lists of communities.
Some communities are seasonal. The holiday fests on
Other communities have a calendar to schedule activities through the year. These usually appear in December or at the beginning of January.
If you want to make new friends, use the Add Me communities. Watch for the "friendzy" or "friending meme" type posts in blogs or communities because people pass those around periodically.
>> HOW to use this site? <<
* Browse around to see what other folks are doing in communities and individual blogs. Latest Things is good for this. Take notes on things you like and might want to try yourself.
* You can share things with your audience. Dreamwidth lets you make a post with links, images, embedded media, etc. It can be long or short.
* Look for communities that interest you. Most of them allow members to post and comment. Some are more open, a few are just for announcements from one or several people.

Pretty much anything you want. Your private blog is your space and you can suit your tastes there.
Communities typically have a focus. Some of them let anyone post anything that is on topic. Some have a schedule with shifting themes. Some give you a template to fill in when making post; this is common in communities based on recommendations, recipes, reviews, fanworks, etc. Some have a post that explicitly lists welcome topics:
"Things You Can Talk About Here" in
"Things You Can Talk About Here" in
Many bloggers use recurring posts to pin down their key interests and maintain activity, which is also a good source of inspiration if you aren't sure what you want to post yet. Consider making a weekly update post which might cover things you've written, seen, or done.
